The best part is when I have a class of relatively mature students who understand and accept that there is a certain amount of work that needs to be done. That way, there are fewer discipline problems, we can have fun in class getting through the work with time to spare. In those cases, I find myself going to the trouble to plan more exciting lessons and field trips because I appreciate their attitudes and work ethic.

The worse part is dealing with a parent who thinks his/her child can do no wrong. That student tends to cause the most trouble because the parent doesn't see the need to administer discipline and "the whole world is against that poor child." In the meantime, the child is poisoning my classroom with negativity.

Usually I do have fun, but the general attitude of my students typically sets the tone. If more are "slackers" who tend to look for shortcuts, teaching is drudgery because I'm so busy dealing with their attitudes that teaching the subject matter becomes a secondary hurdle to overcome.

Most days I absolutely have fun! Each day is different.

Best part: the kids. They keep you young! Gotta be able to relate to your students.

Worst parts: bureaucracy; state mandated testing (NCLB); long hours for not outstanding salary; people thinking I don't do a lot of work. the dysfunctional attitudes that come with teaching kids in poverty.

50% of educators leave the profession within 5 years, 1/3 within 3 years. That's really saying something!

Teachers are either glamorized or reviled (all the stupid sex scandals). We're not gods, and we're not unimportant. Is there a middle ground somewhere?

The worst part are two coworkers, one who is the same age as me and is NOWHERE NEAR RETIRING. The best part is not having some crazy retail manager yelling at you all day (after working at various mall jobs over the last 13 years). I love Scholastic book orders!

I try to have fun!

Best - no 2 days are the same, kids surprise you
Worst - paperwork, too much and a lot of it is useless stuff that never gets looked at.
Most days are fun and not many people can say that about their jobs.

The best part is actual teaching. The worst part is all the clerical work that is mandated.
