The Ramones made punk "radio"able...you could hear a defined beat and lyrics...short songs tho.

Not at all. I'm not even sure what one song you're talking about. "Blitzkrieg Bop"? Or maybe "I Wanna Be Sedated", the only to get real airplay? But niether of those are their best (although "Blitzkrieg Bop" comes close). And their first four albums were some of the best albums ever made and they released the best live album ever in that time. After that their albums were good but spotty with occasional greatness.

But I would guess that if it's not your type of music then you have to understand what it was like when they came out to see that they could never be called overrated. I wasn't there either but I understand what was such a big deal and I love (LOVE) the music as well. But the point is, when the Ramones came out, rock 'n' roll as a form of rebellion was pretty much dead. All you could hear on the radio or see advertised or buy was slow droning boring prog rock where it wasn't a good song unless it had an unfeasibly long title and even longer guitar solos that went nowhere and had no real meaning. It wasn't youthful anymore, it had no real energy, it was a genre for old men who wanted to be seen as serious artists not jusr musicians. So imagine you're a youthful little scamp who's been miserable listening to this old man BS and living off of 7 year old Stooges albums, even older Velvet Underground albums, and the occasional T.Rex. Then all of a sudden you hear this new song, and it's not slow and boring, and it doesn't have solos, it's not singing about wizards or magic valleys or stories from topographical oceans that you can't relate to in any way, and believe it or not it sounds young and rebellious and in a way you've never heard before. You've never heard anything played so fast or loud or with such simple lyrics, it's actually new, there's actually new music you can get excited about. Thank god!

For that period it really was art in it's simplicity and originality. Not only did it revamp what rock 'n' roll originally was, it redid it more nergetically than it had ever been done before. Everything that was fun and enjoyable about music is packed into each of their 1-2 minute songs, and rock 'n' roll finely scared your parents again, what could be better? So no, the Ramones are not over rated, and I don't think they're rated too highly in most places to be honest. All the rock critics are too busy giving Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck head to pay attention to a bunch of punk kids that had the balls to do something drastically different and reclaim rock 'n' roll for the kids. And when they do get credit it seems contrived like since so much of the rest of the world has accepted that they were a great blessing to us all, the critics have decided to part their lips with the units of the English hard/prog rockers long enough to mutter a generic praise when they have to. And besides that, they or artists influenced by them have influenced virtually everything that claims to be rock that came after and literally all that claims to be punk. They (re)invented rock.

As far as I'm concerned that's like saying the wheel is an overrated invention.

Currently listening to "Commando" by the Ramones.

Well if the Ramones are considered overrated, then so is Fall Out Boy.

I loved the Ramones. I think as a punk band they were as good as it gets. Overrated? In some circles maybe.

I like the Ramones. Their lyrics weren't that deep but they definitely made an impact on the musical community.

oh jesus. alright person above me please please please keep it a little shorter.

No ramones weren't overrated because they were always rated very crappy. critics hated the Ramones. and thats fine. they didnt play for critics.

they had tons of songs... and i dunno what your talking about "a tshirt".

and lastly, to someone else who answered on here, punk rock was not the defining anti-gov. movement, are you kidding me? how about the 60's? i mean,
"punk" didnt come out till late 70's but in 60's you had bands like MC5.... way before punk. that whole era was anti-gov. punk was not the end all be all in that regard.

bottom line... Ramones aren't overrated... their under appreciated.

the ramones started a revolution before the internet age and they got poor/lowerclass people world wide to raise a fist and stand up to the government and they spoke of things never before experessed in music before the ramones and before punk rock music was safe. never again will fans unite like they do for punk rock. and they had tons of hits not just 1 song they san the kkk took my baby away , sheena is a punk , blitzkreig bop , pet cemetary , rockn roll high school , do you remember rock n roll radio? , beat on the brat etc etc ..

Blitzkreig Bop, I Wanna Be Sedated, Rockaway Beach...

There are many more. Their songs were pretty straightforward but they did a lot with them.
