I have a green-spotted puffer, and he has a 10 gallon tank - I've been putting in about 3/4 cup of salt solution, after looking everywhere on the internet for the right amount that should be put in. Does anybody know some sort of "recipe" for how much of the salt needs to go in the water?

i dont know the exact ratio off hand..

But if you are reading it off of a hydrometer which is used in saltwater to measure the salt. on a hydrometer salt water is 1.020-1.024

For brackish... it is 1.002

You might want to look into buying a hydrometer as brackishwater is similar to saltwater and you might need on for later use.

The reason there is no formula for brackish water is because the salinity and specific gravity of the water that our so-called brackish species live in is highly variable. I've watched Liberty Mollies in the surf gutters in Belize City go from full strength marine water to dead soft rainwater in a matter of 15 minutes. The brackish environment varies with the weather,so as long as the specific gravity is at or below that of sea water it should be OK. When doing water changes don't be too concerned about keeping one set of water conditions, just try to make the changes gradually, and when adding "make up water" (replacing evaporation) remember that salt doesn't evaporate,so only add salt when you've removed some water. A hydrometer(need not be an expensive one) will be a big help in maintaining the proper water conditions for your puffer.

All my books are boxed up at present but I think you should call your local pet shop or aquarium shop. I have kept puffers in brackish before but it's been many years. I do believe it was a bit more than 1per5gals. though. That sounds more like a medication tank.

what you need is a hydrometer for sure...no formula will ever be accurate if you have no way of knowing what the salt level in the aquarium currently is...you will lose track after repeated waqter changes of what the salinity level is...hydrometers are only a few bucks at most at any pet store..i forgot the exact range of what brackish ona hydrometer is but they will tell you at the pet shop

I have heard that i tablespoon of salt is enough for your puffer. I have been questioning this too because I don't know the right amount. It think your okay right now.
