d = # of dogs
h = # of humans

Assuming that a dog and a human has only one head each

1) d + h = 24
d = 24 - h

And we think we know how many legs each has also

2) 4d + 2h = 62

Now we have two equations in two unknowns - use the result from equation 1 in equation 2

2a) 4(24 - h) + 2h = 62
96 - 4h + 2h = 62
96 - 2h = 62
-2h = - 34
h = 17

1) d = 24 - h
d = 7

Check
2) 4(7) + 2(17) = 62
28 + 34 = 62
62 = 62

x = number humans
y = number dogs
Then x+y = 24 <-- Each human and each dog have 1 head
2x+4y = 62 <-- Each human has 2 feet; each dog has 4 feet
2(24-y) + 4y = 62 <-- Substitute 24-y for x
48 -2y +4y = 62
2y = 14
y = 7 = dogs
x= 24-y = 17 = humans

17 human heads +7 dog heads = 24 total heads
17*2 human feet + 7*4 dog feet = 34+28 =62 feet

You have two relationships which turns into two equations:

Number of dog heads + Number of human heads = 24
Number of dog feet + Number of human feet = 62

What you are looking for is the number of humans (let's call if H) and the number of dogs (let's call it D).

Each human has one head and each dog has one head.
So if there are H humans then there are H human heads.
And if there are D dogs then there are D dog heads.
So D heads + H heads = 24 heads total.

Each human has 2 feet.
So if there are H humans then there are 2*H human feet.
Each dog has 4 feet.
So, if there are D dogs then there are 4*D dog feet.
So 2H feet + 4D feet = 62 feet total.

Our two equations are:
D+H=24
2H+4D=62

You can use the substitution method to solve these:
D+H=24 can turn into H=24-D
Now insert (24-D) in place of H, in the second equation:
2(24-D)+4D=62
Now you have one equation with one variable. Let's multiply it out:
48-2D+4D=62
4D-2D=62-48
2D=14
D=7

Since we know D=7, we can figure out what H is:
H+D=24
H+7=24
H=24-7
H=17

In conclusion, we have 7 dogs and 17 humans.

4x+2y=62
x+y=24
first you have to set up your problem. humans have two legs, and let humans represent y. so 2 times y = number of human legs. dogs have 4 legs. let x represent number of dogs. so 4 times x is number of dog legs. so add the two up and you'll get 62 total.
humans and dogs both have one head, so just x+y=24. then just solve for x in the first problem and substitute. x=7 and y=17. so 17 humans and 7 dogs

let x human and y dog at the show

x + y = 24 (one head each)
2x + 4y = 62 (human has 2 legs and dog has 4)
2x + 2y = 48
2y = 14
y = 7
x = 24 - 7= 17

every dog has 1 head and 4 feet & every human has 1 head and 2 feet
so suppose number of humans are h and number of dogs d
so
4d+2h=62 ---------------->(1)
d+h=24 ---> X 2
2d+2h=48 ------------------>(2)
subtract (1)-(2)
2d=14
d=7
so h=24-7=17
