I posted this as "additional details" to an earlier question, but it bears mention on it's own & I modified it slightly:

(about Dworkin)

http://www.amptoons.com/blog/archives/2005/04/12/andrea-dworkin-1946-2005/

The link I posted was from a popular feminist blog. The posters there were speaking about her with respect and remembering her as an important feminist.

Is that how feminists "distance themselves" from her?

...Because a sexist bigot should have NO PART in a movement about "equality."

I don't care if she had a "few good points."

I'm sure Adolf Hitler had a "few good points" in his life, but that filth got the shunning he deserved from anyone with half a brain.

If feminists do not publicly denounce her and do so without a "yea, but she was sometimes right about..." then do not be surprised when people think feminism has gone astray from an egalitarian movement.

The Violinist:

Out of all the posts there, how many were outraged that a sexist bigot was memorialized & given a positive spotlight?

How many showed support for her?

It's logical to look at that as a clear example of feminists supporting her.

It's also logical to see this:

http://www.now.org/history/dworkin.html

...from a major feminist hub & realize that again, that sexist bigot was supported by mainstream feminists.

If a Democrat started to run a campaign on "bringing back slavery" but happened to also have some good points in other areas, do you think his fellow Democrats would NOT denounce him?

If they didn't denounce him, would you think they supported him?

I'm about a 180 from Ms. Dworkin. She did so much damage to the feminist movement it isn't funny.

Is it really logical to assume every feminist supports Dworkin, from a single website?

The word "feminist" has basically lost its definition. Nowadays, a lot of people call themselves feminists.. Whether they are a man hater or whether they truly believe in equal rights.

For that reason I've quit basing my opinions of someone from what they label themselves, but more of what their beliefs really are. Maybe you should do the same.

EDIT-Btw, I think Dworkin probably has done the most damage to feminists in general.. And I am a feminist.

EDIT-as I said, it's impossible to judge just from websites.. The word "feminist" has basically lost its definition, it can mean anything.. Which makes it very difficult/impossible to place a label on all feminists.

I doubt the feminists that claim to separate themselves from Dworkin are anything like the ones that support her.

Also remember that websites that promote a certain type of belief or behavior will attract people that agree with that belief or behavior, so on line is not the best survey place.

Hooo boy.
"I didn't even know who she was before I came here".

If true, the poster is a bit ignorant about feminism and begs the question as to why they defend it so staunchly if they know so little about it. If false, which I think they are, it proves your point of your question to be that in public feminists like to distance themselves from feminists like Dworkin while secretly agreeing with her because she actually represented feminism.

A lot of feminists distanced themselves from her because she was so, so far out there. The majority of feminists, in my experience, do not hate men. Dworkin's views were so awful and extreme that many feminists felt she hurt their movement. I would think a fair amount of feminists understand that to be accepted by men means that (to some extent) they'll have to accept men.
Any movement, political party, or organization will have extremists - Republicans, Liberals, what have you. Dworkin's on the far fringe.
I think Noami Wolf, Camille Paglia, and a few others have some valid ideas & findings, even if I don't agree with them all. Dworkin's a hateful, repellent nut, and probably a lot of femists disagree with her wholeheartedly.

Dworkin was not the "spokesperson" for feminism. I agree with some things she said, and disagree with other points she made.

No, I don't distance myself from the general framework of her arguments. Not at all. I disagree with some of her positions, because I'm not a blind follower of any authority.

Spare me the cliched Hitler comparisons; anti-feminists are the ones spreading the Big Lie. They're the ones trying to appropriate the role of the persecuted. They're the ones exploiting women like we're the New Jews.

The point is that we don't look to her as an idol. I think she deserves to be shunned — her bad points far outweigh the good.
