There is only a fight if you choose to be in one. You make a conscious decision to partake in a fight or not. When you get home diffuse the situation. Let your partner say what they have to say and say something like "I am sorry you are so upset." Let them spew out whatever it is that they have to say until they run out of steam, knowing that this is their problem, that they are making into a big issue. No matter what, you choose not to be a part of this fight. Once they have exhausted themselves, and run out of steam, again, acknowledge their feelings, and let them know that you don't want them to be upset, and if you can give them a hug. If you feel it is necessary at this point, say you want to take tomorrow to think about it, before responding. Then disconnect from it, until tomorrow. The point is, if you do not want to argue, don't. If you don't want to be stressed out before bed time, then that is your choice, just as it is your partners choice to get all upset when you walk in the door. How nice is that? Chances are if a person is in a bad mood, the fact that you allowed them to vent without it escalating into something big, will for some, bring them to the realization that they owe someone an apology.
