They hibernate for 5 or 6 months during the coldest part of the year. When they do come out it is at dusk and then they return before the sun comes out. That's how the legend of the vampire got a start.

You don't need a bat expert. It is common knowledge among wildlife biologist that bats both migrate and over winter, depending on the species. You have made a common mistake, assuming that all bats are the same and the only kind in the world are the ones around your house.

There are very few absolutes. There is no such thing as an average bat, or bird, or frog, or snake or person.

"In Idaho, all 14 bat species migrate either short distances of up to about 60 miles, seasonally between breeding and hibernating roost sites, such as many Myotis species, or, in the case of the hoary bat and silver-haired bat, up to about 600 miles to spend the winter in the southern third of the United States"

The answer is different species of bats do different things, but yes, certain bats do have a type of hybernation called a tupor. Unless you know the species of bats, and/or where your writing from, there is really no way to answer the question about your specific population.
