There is confusion over the term "photojournalism". In some countries it is just a "news photographer" while in others it refers to a journalist that takes photos to back up their story. Other people consider a TV news cameraman as a photojournalist. You need to specify which definition you are talking about.

In some countries a journalist and a news photographer are separate occupations, and no-one is allowed to combine the two. Australia is such a place with the ban coming from the union.

Examples of good "news photography" would be;

Alan Capa's photo of the Republican (anti-Fascist) soldier being shot during the Spanish Civil war.

George Silk's photo of an Australian soldier with bandages covering his eyes being led by a Papua New Guinea native, a "Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel" during WW-2.

There are two photos from the Second Indochina (Vietnam) War.
The first is in February 1968 -- During TET, when the Saigon Police Chief executed an unarmed Viet Cong suspect by shooting him in the head.
The second is in early 1972 -- when the US napalmed a small village and a young girl run down along the road naked and screaming in pain.

I have not listed the famous photo of raising the flag at Imo Jima as the one that people know about was a faked shot. The original shot was with a much smaller flag and less number of marines.
