It's the way of preparing them for tests by reviewing what they learned in class. If they don't do their homework, they'll screw up big time.

I agree w/the first 2 answers...
Homework helps the student "embed" the information in their brain & memory for easier access. Tests tell the teacher pretty much if a student is doing their homework and/or learning. Once again, homework helps the student "engrave" in their head what is taught so they can move forward.

PS: I personally think w/out homework, coming home, watching TV, playing w/friends, etc., would probably supersede schoolwork and you'd be back to SQUARE 1 the next day. I really do.

They shouldn't. Its a waste of time, really. Although its a review of what they did in class that day, its a BIG time consumer and not worth it at all. Teachers should just help them study IN CLASS instead of giving them homework. Some kids don't ever do homework and never pass. They should realize that by now and that it consumes too much time. Even if homework is worth a lot of points in their grading - its only like 5 points in college, universities, etc. Some kids have trouble remembering things, homework puts down their grade A LOT and as I say about the kids that don't do their homework, they can't pass.

children should have homework to enforce the things they learn during the day, to let parents know what they need help on, and to let teachers know if they should help the child imrove in that subject.

The main reasons are to reinforce work done in class, to creat a link between home and school and to foster discipline and independence.
