It is pretty shocking to realize my old car (100,590.8 miles, 4-dr hatchback) gets better than MOST cars out there. But I just don't understand why this should be. Does anybody know?

Your car is under powered and has few if any of the modern conveniences of modern cars. Since you do not have stability control or ABS or air bags, your car is lighter and easier to propel forward thus not needing a very large engine. Yours is a 3 cyl. Also your car is extremely slow and would not be considered acceptable to todays standards. Your car also pollutes 5 times as much as the modern small cars and many times more than most small hybrid cars.

The Geo Metro is a very fuel efficient car, no question. It's a very light sub-compact with a very small engine...pure physics for good fuel economy.

The Prius (the greenies' anchor-car) still has an advantage though. It's a comfy midsize car loaded with a lot of equipment and features and I regularly average 60 mpg with it. The emissions are also quite a bit lower.
