There are tons of guitars for you to choose from. If you want a harder metal feel (such as Dream Theater, Sonata Arctica, Rob Zombie, etc.) look at guitars such as Ibanez, BC Rich, Schecter, and Dean. If you want a early rock sound (Eric Clapton, Doors, Jeff Beck) go for a Squier Stratocaster. In my opinion, I like the Les Paul by Gibson (Epiphone for cheaper versions). The Les Paul is good for any style of music you want to play, plus it can be cheap. Don,t forget to get a good amp as well. Usually a good small Fender amp will do you good while you are learning, but a Line 6 is very good as well. It is all up to choice. If you want to browse, check out

Best way is to do a little research. Go to your local guitar store and see what is on offer in your price range (including an amp) . Try out everything you can afford at the setting you would want to use and see what gives you the sound you like. Consider getting a used guitar - there's nothing wrong with that. Hope this helps
