Brain functions can continue long after consciousness is gone. The various functions will slow and stop as the individual brain cells begin to die. This can take quite a while for some and can be a few seconds for others. A lot depends on the type of brain , the functions involved and the locations of the cells.

According to articles which I have read in several places (hence no individual 'source info' on this one) the human head remains conscious for 15 - 20 seconds after decapitation.
However, I agree with the G W Bush reference & reckon total brain removal doesn't seem to have affected his ability to function (?) as a human & stuff things up for everybody else. Here's to January 2008 when U.S.A. gets a replacement!

the shock of the spinal cord being severed is like pulling the power lead from the back of your pc.
during the french revoloution, people believed it lived for a few seconds as lips would often twitch after a date with madame guillotine but scientists now believe that it is just a reflex contraction action of the muscles in the jaw

I guess, it stop within seconds as there will be no blood to supply it with oxygen. It just freezes like a computer. Well that's my personal opinion as an accountant. Me no doctor friend.
