Angle of elevation is the angle measured up from the horizontal to the line of sight to a feature or target point as in the picture:

We say the tangent of angle A is H over R:
tan A = H/R
Angle A can be measured from a scale drawing using a protractor.
Angle A can also be calculated using a scientific calculator using the inverse tangent or arc tangent function. The calculator has a 2nd F key or 2ND key.

Ex:
H = 40 feet
R = 100 feet
H/R = 0.4
Make sure the calculator is in degree mode.
The key sequence is:
[.] [4] [2nd F] [tan]
In this case you would get 21.8degrees
