I had just left the park, I live in Titusville, FL, and they are all over there by the river, My fiance and I were having his lunch break there and I was in shock over the amount of dragonflys! I got to thinking do they bite and what would they eat?

A bite from a Dragonfly is almost painless and will not even occur unless you seriously threaten one. They do not have stingers so that rules that out.

A Dragonfly has to eat it's own weight in mosquitos and other nasties every hour just to maintain it's energy levels. That's a lot of mosquitos. The point I am making is that they are very beneficial and you should be thankful that there are so many of them. They will not bite you.

Not only that, they are the most proficient fliers in the animal kingdom. They are so cool to watch. The only creatures that even come close to their flying abilities are the Hummingbird's, and Bat's.

They are good to have around!!!

Dragonfly Bite

Dragonflies don't have stingers, which kind of cuts back on their ability to sting. Males do have claspers to grab females by the neck during mating, and these are at the ends of their abdomens - It may be that they could pinch you with them, but that's something I haven't encountered. I suppose they might be able to bite, but I've never heard of anybody being bitten by one.
They eat small-to-medium-sized flying insects that they catch on the wing.

I was sitting on my couch and something stung my arm. I didn't know what it was and swatted at it. I am pretty sure this is a dragonfly. It died and I have been looking at pics to see. It hurt and it still hurts, but there is no mark.

Dragonflies are beneficial insects. They eat mosquitoes, for one thing. They do not bite or sting.

wow now that is a hard question! my father (the bug expert) once told me as a child that they eat gnats and other small insects..as far as if they bite...if provoked, they sure sting something fierce!! but the old rule goes...you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. the stings are non-poisonous but hurt like heck! what prompted your random question? being since it is october and they are prtty much gone till next summer.....
