I'm into paranormal fiction right now. My fave is Charlaine Harris. Her characters really come to life for me. I haven't read her mystery series, though. Well I read one of them and it just didn't do it for me. I would never have guessed the same person wrote those two!
In the romance genre, I like Linda Howard, Karen Robards and Nora Roberts. The great thing about all of them, Nora especially, is that they have a long list of books they've written. If you like one, you're in for a treat!
Vampires:
The Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. Her latest "Grave" book was actually pretty good too. I didn't care for the first one, but this one introduced a hint of romance (slightly incestuous, but so what) that I liked.
Sunshine by Robin McKinley. I will be among those mobbing her if she doesn't write a sequel. Not enough sex or romance, but the hint was pretty tantalizing. And that aside it was just quite a jolly good book.
The series by Stephen Spruill. Lords of Light, Daughter of Darkness, Rulers of Darkness (in reverse order). LOL can be hard to come by - I had to order from UK Amazon.
Savannah Russe is ok.
Laurell K. Hamilton is a duh, although her plots have been thrown to the wayside in favor of sex. Which is good, but .....
Shannon Drake: All her books are good but after you've read a few you realize it's the same book over and over, only the characters change. Which is GREAT if you really like her, but I've had enough for now.
Witches: Kim Harrison is ok
Werewolves: Lori Handeland. The first one kicked Major ***.
Kelley Armstrong.
Patricia Briggs is worth watching.
Psychics: Kay Hooper.
Keri Arthur
Others I've read and enjoyed but no longer pursue: Heather Graham/Kat Martin (same person), Gena Showalter, Rebecca York, Linsay Sands, MaryJanice Davidson, Kathy Love, Katie Macalister, Kerrelyn Sparks, Rosemary Laurey,

I'm a big fan of historical fiction. I love getting enveloped into different places and times, and emerging later having learned a little something too.
My all-time favorite book is "Katherine" by Anya Seton, it's based on a true story of a love affair between a prince and a commoner in medieval England. The historical details are vivid and the characters feel like living, breathing people. I can't promise that the book is 100% historically accurate, but it does a lot better than most historical novels.
Anya Seton wrote some other really good historical books, like "Avalon," "Devil Water," and "Green Darkness." She's one of my favorites. I also like Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series (VERY adult content in some parts), Jane Austen, and Pearl S. Buck.

Max Shulman is fun to read. He wrote such timeless and humorous classics as "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," "Anyone Got a Match," and "Sleep Till Noon."
Amanda Davis' "Wonder When You'll Miss Me" is quite lyrically written.
The complete works of Jane Austen, JK Rowling and Alexander McCall Smith are also enjoyable.
Herman Wouk's "Marjorie Morningstar" is a bit dated, but nonetheless provides a good read.

Alice Sebold. She has published two fiction books and one memoir all of which are excellent. They are a bit graphic though (meaning that they are centered around murder and a bit of rape), so if you are under the age of 13 I wouldn't recommend reading her. The books are very excellent though, her words jump right off the page. It's amazing actually.

anne rice writes her vampire and witch chronicle books beautiflly. instead of making the vampires and supernateral scary she makes it gorgeous and alluring. the way she describes appearance and spirit of the characters. she also goes into a lot of detail describing the places, she paints a wonderful picture in your mind that u can invision in real life...also she does describe sexual encounters with modesty and taste....my favorite book is Blood and Gold....i read it every fall and never get bored....enjoy : )
