The manual says if I hear a noise I have to take it into the shop. I know BMW will charge me $300 just to look at it. Why can't I just check and add power steering fluid?? It is a 2002 330i. It makes that noise when I first turn it on in the morning, then as I drive it, the power steering noise goes away, as if the fluid has gone where it needs to go with the car warmed up. It then drives OK with no struggle to turn the wheel. Thanks!

Your power steering reservoir is right next to the oil filter housing/container. And is clearly visible just by standing right in front of your car looking at the engine with the hood opened.

Has a screw top that looks like a "star".

It's black in color; about the size of a large can of Progresso Soup. It also may have words on it that says "ATF only" (Auto Transmission Fluid) - since the power steering system uses ATF.

It has a built-in dipstick in the cap that lets you know the correct level of fluid.

If the fluid is very dirty, you probably need to replace the fluid and filter; don't just top it up. Call the guys at bavauto.com, they'll ship you replacement fluid and filter for a lot less than the $300 price tag.

I had a little earlier 325is and it was a round cylinder near the front of the engine with a simple cap on it that unscrews and if that does not work look at your owners manual and see what is says about checking your PS level and I would imagine that most any non BMW service shop like Pep Boys would charge you a $75 fee to look at your problem vs $300 which then would be applied to fixing your problem.
