Everyone loved Ivan the Terrible! That's kind of a mistranslation; "awe-inspiring" might be closer. I guess his greatest contribution was his transition from the prince of Muscovy into the Tsar of all the Russian People. Sadly, he was a bit, well, different. As a child he used to throw puppies off the Kremlin walls. When his beloved first wife died, he started to lose it a bit. He put together this horrible secret police force that would run around causing terror and destruction. Then he decided to abdicate and shut himself up in a monastery until his people, who didn't think they would survive without a ruler, begged him to return. This gave him a sort of mandate to continue the running around causing terror and destruction. He killed his own son in a rage.
