contrary to the first answer you can get a positive and then a negative. With my first I was 2 weeks late and I took a home test and got a positive...I went to the doctors the next day and got a negative and then one week later I got a positive and a 100% with the blood test.
With my second I was only a week late and got 2 positives.
Make sure when you test to try and get early am. The any time of day tests can be done any time of day but the hormones levels are still highest and most accurate in the morning.

I tested too early this time (8 days before my period was due) and got a negative.
I tried again 4 days before my period was due and got a positve. I was using the Dollar Store tests - they cost just a buck apiece so I didn't feel guilty about spending a lot of money on multiple tests.
Some women don't get early positives, even when they have already missed their period. It all depends on how high your HcG hormone levels are. For some mothers, they stay low in the early weeks and are not detected by a test.
In that case, they might have to wait another week or two and test again, if they suspect pregnancy. Or you could make an appointment at your doctor's office and request a blood test which is 99% accurate, even early on.

If your worried that you are pregnant, and have not had a period, you need to make an appoinment with your doctor.
To answer your question though, I had about 4 negative pregnancy tests (I used EPT) before I reached a positive. Even after I had a positive, I went to the ER for one of there pregnancy tests, and it said negative. It just depends how far along you are as to when a test will show if you are pregnant or not. After conception occurs, your HCg level doubles every day. So if you are pregnant, you may not be far enough for a the test to register your HCg level.

I believe it is possible to get false negs for upto being 8 weeks preggo!, it all depends on the test, the level og HCG, the time of day you take the test and also if you drink a lot of fluids before the test they can dilute the hcg in your urine!
I got a pos at 3 days after period was due with a cheapie test from a pound shop, I had one left over ant did it at 10 weeks preggo "just out of curiousity" and it was neg-, had a scan a day later and little bubba was there fine and well, so it seems that you can get a false neg at 10 weeks even!

Me *raises hand*
I used First Response.
5 days before missed period - negative.
3 days before missed period - negative.
2 days before missed period - positive. Also positive on EPT digital.
So, gestationally speaking, I was approximately 2 weeks pregnant (or about one month according to my doctor).
If you're already late, you may not have enough of the pregnancy hormone HCG in your system yet. A blood test from a doctor would be more sensitive, so you may want to call your OBGYN and schedule an appointment. Good luck!

When I got pregnant this time, I took 3 tests before I got a positive one. I knew that I was pregnant, I just didn't get the positive test. I was about 4 weeks along when I finally got the positive one. 8^)

Yes, I got loads of negative results b4 mine turned positive, I was just excited and testing too soon - wait a couple more days and test again.
If you need help to find out when you are ovulating you can buy ovulating tests from ebay - very cheap and reliable - I used these to find out my cycle was actually really long and I was trying at the wrong time anyway.
Now I'm over 40 weeks pregnant and got pregnant within 2 months of trying, so I can recommend the tests - both ovulation and pregnancy!...... sex also helps!!
Good luck,
Sophia

Yes, it is possible to have a neg. test before a pos. test. If you take a test and it is neg. you should wait like 5 days before you take another one. Or go to your doctor or local Urgent Care and get a Blood Pregnancy Test. That test can tell you as early as 3 days pregnant. Good Luck if you want a baby.

Yea - my mate did the test too early and got a negative... then went to the doctor and got a positive around a week later. About eight and a half months later, she had a wickle bay bee. And about another 21 years of angst on its way I would think!

The tests test for a hormone which is produced in your body and is in enough quantity to be reactive after about 2 weeks after you get pregnant. This happened to a friend of mine so she got a blood test, which is a lot more accurate. Go see your doctor and ask for a blood test.
