My OBGYN has me lay down after dinner every night and make sure the baby makes 10 movements within two hours. Normally my baby does it within 20 minutes.

Anyone elses doctor having them do this? Is it necessary? What does it accomplish??

Counting for kicks later in pregnancy is certainly not necessary but it's a helpful indictator that all is well and the baby is active.

Whenever movements decline dramatically or disappear it's a good sign that something might be wrong. Mothers who are paying attention to fetal movements can quickly seek help if this occurs.

It's just a way to determine if your baby is active enough. Obviously they can't hook you up to a monitor 24-7 to make sure your baby is moving and reacting as it should, but the kick count is a good indicator of that. If you've had an problems in your pregnancy, they probably want you to do it more frequently than the average person who does it.....hardly ever really.

The kick count is just for a little more reassurance that the baby is ok. If your baby doesn't kick 10 times with in 2 hrs, that could be a sign that something is wrong.

A daily kick count is a good idea, but not necessary if you can feel your baby moving around throughout the day. Sounds like your OBGYN is very cautious, and that is a GOOD THING!

It is a way for you to monitor the baby's movement. Sometimes wheh you get further along in your pregnancy the baby will move less due to less space in the uterus. Doing this exercise is a good indication that baby is healthy and still doing its thing in the uterus.

Wow.. unless you're high risk, or have high BP or other issues theres no reason to do a kick count. Its the equivalent of a non-stress test. They only do those when theres a concern or an issue.

If you're a normal pregnancy and everything else is fine I wouldnt bother. Its rediculous.
