My twin boys are 2 years old. Although the youngest boy can clearly string a few sentences together, his brother has a severe hearing problem and is having speech therapy. He has improved 100% in only 3 months of lessons to what he was.

All kids are different.
My daughter started talking up a storm at 7 months and still hasn't shut up (she is 19 today is her birthday). Sometimes she has fallen asleep mid sentence.
My son on the other hand was spoiled by the women at day care and just had to grunt and point; he was 18 months before he spoke in sentences. He is 17 now and a typical teenager - sometimes I wish he didn't talk.
My step grandson was "tongue tied" which is where the skin in his mouth was attached to his gums and had to have surgery; this affected his ability to talk. But now he is 13 and does fine.
It's good they are doing this for your niece; the amount of vocabulary and speech she has at a young age affects her schoolwork later on; this way they can make sure she also doesn't have hearing problems or other conditions that can affect speech. A lot of kids just dont want to talk, they will start when they are good and ready and find other ways to communicate before then. With the therapy your niece will be able to when she is ready to talk up a storm.

Here comes the broken record - all kids develop at their own rate! That said, my son was speaking over 10 words by a year old. HOWEVER, he's always been a very verbal child. Most of the kids I know were speaking 10 words at between 18 and 20 months. The so - called "average" for 24 months is at least 50. How old is your niece? I really wouldn't worry too much; with speech therapy, she has a great chance of catching up. Good luck!

I thought my son would never talk. He was over 2 and still not saying a word. Then one day he started singing lalalalabumba a song on the radio. He started singing with it and we all sang with it every time it came on the radio and he finally started talking. He had perfect speech and his words came out in sentences almost from the get go.

My daughter is 2 years old and says very few words. Eg, yeah, no, brush, bath, fish, cat, bye....... It is also making it very difficult for potty training as she wont tell me when she needs a wee!!! I'm sure your neice will get there eventually and the more people talk to her and read to her the more she will copy and communicate. My health visitor also told me that when my daughter goes to nursery she will start talking more to get her needs met.
