Aw, I'm sorry for your loss there. It's great though that you're remembering him through your son though.
I think it's fine if you give your son the first name or middle name of Robert (more so than William I think, since I've actually never heard of Bobby being a nickname for that), since you know exactly where the inspiration for that name came from. Another idea, if this is feasible, is to use the man's last name in your son's name. This might not be practical depending on what his last name was, but it could be a good idea.

What was this man's middle name? Maybe you can use that! Or you can name the baby Robert, William, or any other name that represents Bobby and use that.

You could name him Robert or William to allow him the option of being called Bobby, or you could use your friend's middle name. Another option is to make your child's middle name Bobby/Robert/William in order to honor him.
I'm very sorry for your loss, but best of luck with your child!

I don't think you have to give the child the exact same name to have the spirit of memorial to someone who has died. Anyone who was close to you, and that friend will "get" the connection, and for the people why didn't know him- well, it won't matter. Robby is really cute for a boy, or even just Rob (or Robb). Bobbie is cute for a girl, with a second name, like Bobbie-Jade, Bobbie-Andria (you get the drift).

If it's a girl, you could use Bobbi as a middle name, or Bobby as a middle name for a boy would work, too. You wouldn't have to say it all the time, but you would still be honoring your friend.

Bobby is not a bad name. I like it.
Did bobby have a middle name that you could put as a first name?
Or use the name Robert and call him Bobby
Sorry for your loss
