Yes, he did come back. They were going to shut down the Scranton branch, but then the manager from the Stamford branch (where Jim was) took another job. Jim, Karen, Andy and some other people who quit transfered to Scranton. That was in the episode of Season 3 titled 'The Merger'. I will not tell you anything else so you are not spoiled!!

Yes he comes back to Scranton in the episode called "The Merger." His branch in Stanford merges with the Scranton branch bringing the tension back between him and Pam. At the end on season 3, Jim applies for a job at the corporate offices. You'll have to watch season 4 to see what happens next.
