im going to "audition" for the musical "Hair" and i was looking for some songs( my drama teacher said that anysong is ok. anyway i was thinking of singing "staying alive" by the beeges...because both the sonbg and the musical is based in the 80's. but if you have better ideas for songs, i would really appreciate it. thanks! =)

I'm glad swigaro made the correction :-) The 60's is altogether different :-) Anyhow, your avatar is female so I'm going off the assumption that you are as well. You don't say what role you are auditioning for and generally you choose a song based off of what role you want as well as your vocal range. I would get familiar with the show and soundtrack. There was a film made that came out in 1979 but I couldn't tell you how close it is to the stage show, never saw it. You should also be listening to the music from the show. Sheila has a good song called Easy To Be Hard. Generally you do not sing from the show you are auditioning for, but you should still know the show, the music, and the character you want. You usually sing a song that could in theory be sung by the character that you want from the show you are auditioning for. Sing a song that shows a character with similar attributes.

You should definitely sing something that's similiar to the show and since Hair is a rock musical, anything in that genre would work. Godspell and Pippin are good suggestions. I would also add Jesus Christ Superstar (even though you're female, check out some of Judas' songs - he goes up to the E above 3rd space C!), Tommy, Rent, The Rocky Horror Picture Show or you can always just sing a rock song (non-musical theatre) from the '60s

The Musical Hair is set in the 60's. Neither the musical, nor Staying Alive (released in 1977) really have anything to do with the 80's.

That being said, go with something that you are comfortable with, and that shows off your voice. If you want something that is stylistically similar to Hair, go for Godspell or Pippen.

I personally think that song would be to high to sing. You should sing something that shows your pitch and range, but don't pick a song that would be to old for you. Maybe something like "hopelessly devoted to you" from the movie Grease.
