Two reasons, which are of course related to each other.
The first reason is that the sperm generally fertilize the egg in the fallopian tube, and then the fertilized egg has to journey all the way through the rest of the tube and into the uterus where it can safely implant. While it is traveling, it is growing into more and more cells.
The other reason is that the uterine lining needs time to build back up after it is shed during your period, before a fertilized egg can securely implant. The journey from the fallopian tube to the uterus helps to ensure that the uterine lining will be sufficiently regenerated.

because the sperm has to travel all the way up to the egg waiting in the tube and then the fertlized egg has to make it's way all the way back down the tube and find somewhere on the uterus to attach...it's like travelling from new york to california in a car...

The little guy has to go all the thru the tube and swim like crazy so its a little while, its a long journey.
