I've had this happen before too. I figured that they went into some kind of sock limbo in the sky (since nothing else seemed to explain the mysterious disappearance. Then one day, the drier started smelling like something was burning whenever it was turned on. It turned out that the rotating part of the dryer after years of use did not fit as snugly as it did before and sockes were slipping out of the drying chamber into the body of the dryer where the other moving parts are. If your mechanically inclined you can check there as I found quite a few pairs back there.

In the washer, sometimes they can get behind the basket shaped thing the clothes are supposed to be in during the spin cycle.

Yep, this is a common issue for those who do laundry. I've been doing my family's laundry for years.

My theory is, some socks get left behind in washers and dryers. A lot of people do not thouroughly check the washers and dryers after removing clothes. When using front loading washers, it is always good to turn the spinner to make sure a sock didn't get stuck to the side. Also, some people just toss their small pieces on the top of a basket and walk, leaving the possibility for socks to fall off.

This is an easy problem to solve. Buy some large safety pins and pin all socks together in pairs. When they come out of the drawer remove the pin and put it on the dresser. When the socks come off the pin goes back on and they stay pinned through the washer and dryer. Never a lost sock again and never sort and match socks again! It's worked for years for our family.

Look in the lining between the washer basic and the exterior wall of the washer. There's usually a flexible kind of barrier. I don't know about anyone else but I check there about once a month and often find socks.

My husband says they go to Narnia. I have no idea where they do go though. I'm missing a lot of socks.
