There are some politicians who are drunk on power. Those are the ones who would like nothing more than to see everyone give up their minds and spirit to become lazy and completely dependent upon the government for their very existence. In becoming government dependent, the people will quickly forger how to fend for themselves and will be lulled into a false sense of security. All the while, those few politicians will be increasing their bank accounts.

Because there are different political possibilities to realize a welfare state:
Some want the provision of welfare services by the State.
Some want the provision of welfare in society. In many welfare states welfare is not provided by the State but by a combination of independent, voluntary, mutualist and government services. The functional provider of benefits and services may be a central or state government, a state-sponsored company or agency, a private corporation, a charity or another form of non-profit organisation.
Some want a model in which the state assumes primary responsibility for the welfare of its citizens.
What do you prefer?

I don't know anyone who wants a welfare state? There are some who think that helping other people with private funds is a welfare state but it isn't. There are some who don't believe giving tax breaks to rich corporations and their CEOs and every other advantage like taking jobs off shore or being headquartered in Bermuda is not welfare of some sort. Welfare it appears, is in the mind of the beholder. No one really wants a welfare state for corporations or millions of individuals. Those who can least afford to live can be given temporary assistance in many ways if that is welfare maybe we need a little of it. Seeing us having total Socialism as a welfare state is sometimes called is not the desire of anyone. We aren't even close and I doubt we will ever be there.

Only a complete idiot would confuse socialism for a welfare state. The concept behind socialism is to even things out... for EVERYBODY to enjoy life... not just a few that enjoy life at the expense (off the backs) of the working class.
What ppl? There is not one person on this planet that wants a welfare state...
I suppose you think that there are classes of ppl in Heaven...

Eliminating the program would be going back to the real problem.
What would millions of people on welfare do if they stop all welfare programs? Will the crime go up? Will millions magically find a job? Will the economy have an impact by millions of people not being able to buy good and services?
Just give me the name of any country that does not have welfare but the people are living in a better standard than those who have it. After that look at the countries who have welfare programs that are more generous than our and let me know their % of sustained poverty.
It takes money to make money, Therefor no money is sustaining poverty. Take all federal aid from the red states and you will see what happen to their economy. Is it fair for California and New York to sustain Mississipi or Alabama?

I am not at all for a welfare state! I do beleive in helping people to get out of poverty. Just handing them a check will not do that!
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. So, teach them real skills that they are capable of performing and then get them a job. If they refuse to do the job, let them suffer!

i do no longer trust most of the statements on your question. i'm particular that there are some inner maximum hospitals that could desire to deny therapy to somebody, yet there additionally are many extra hospitals that take care of all of us regardless of their skill to pay. I even have faith that it somewhat is sustainable to mandate each and every new child conceived be born if those women provide the new child up for adoption. in case you do no longer desire a new child which you have conceived, or won't be able to discover the money for to maintain that new child, then think of adoption and subsequent time think of start administration! There are waiting lists of human beings who pick to undertake toddlers, yet won't be able to because of the fact there at the instant are not adequate. i think of the compassion of human beings could better than disguise the further toddlers born.

I don't know a single person and haven't heard a politician or anyone else utter any group of words that could lead me to believe that there is even one individual who would like to see the US or any of its component states become a "welfare state". Where on Earth did you get that from?

they want a walefare state because they want the freedom to screw up their lives as much as possible without having to be held accountible for their action. Like getting a doctorate degree in gender studies at the people's expense, then not being able to find a job to pay it off. or eating whatever they want and sitting in front of a computer all day while getting high blood pressure/sugar/cholesterol and then demanding the people pay to medicate their fat asses.

What many of you seem not to see, is that people, through no fault of their own, can come upon hard times. They can be laid off - very easy in this era of outsourcing, get ill and not have health insurance, and end up homeless due to the above etc. etc. It can happen to ANYONE in the working and middle classes - so DO NOT think you are immune. There must be a safety net to protect people from such disasters - for we are our brothers keepers - this is a central tenet of Christianity - if US is really a Christian nation.
Many of you hard hearted Americans whinge about your taxes going to help people, but do not realise what a tax burden you and your children will have due to the debacle in Iraq.
