I support a site which has about 1400 Dell, Compaq and HP computers. The Compaqs (which we no longer purchase) use to arrive with about 10% of them DOA straight out of the box. Would not have a Compaq.

The Dells are excellent PCs to work on. If you open one, Dell takes the time to lay everything out neatly, gives you easy access to all the components, and uses standard parts so that they can be easily upgraded "off the shelf". You do not have to go back to Dell and pay twice as much for an upgrade part. The failure rate on the PCs on of the box is about 2-3%. Most require some kind of a "major" service repair during the first three years of use. But the ease of repair helps to offset that. Plus their web site is excellent for instructions and part information for doing repairs.

The HPs run rock solid. Repairs on them are rarer then Dell. But when they do need repair, it is a nightmare to work on them. They are poorly laid out, impossible to access anything. Often they have duct tape holding cables in place, etc. Because of the poor layout, an repair take two or three times as long, and is more expense. Good luck getting a part from HP, even figuring out what part you need. Their support is bootm of the barrel. Upgrading is impossible unless you buy the parts from them (at twice the street cost).

A fourth alternative is to see if there is a "mom and pop" computer store in your area. Often if you take in a quote from any of the others, the local stores will meet (or beat) it. You get the advance that all the parts are "off the shelf", meaning they are standard and can be easily upgraded. (You can get twice the life out of an u[gradable unit for half the price). Plus they are there local if/when you have an issue. Draw back: most local stores do not do laptops - only desktops.

When paying, look at the parts that are hardest to upgrade first - such as the processor. You can always add your memory or a large hard drive. But you can't usually change the processor and system board. So get the best you can of those.

Hope that info helps you....

I like the hp pavilions ok too. I have never had a inspiron but I did consider buying one when I was looking for the one I have now. They really are all the same in the end but for personal experience dells help service is well kinda dumb.

You've done well choosing dell as in the top major brands:
Dell
Toshiba
Hp
Apple
As for which model the consistants & details of each differ such as weigh, storage capacity, RAMS, CD-ROM, touch pad, tablet, etc....(ex: ask the salesman or look up their catalog on the web).

Macbook, it may cost a little more but you get leopard which is more advanced and easy to use. Read about macs and tiger and leopard on apple.com I have been using one for a couple of years now and they run windows too.
