It's a country property with lots of wildlife, but just recently noticed that a single racoon is staying very close to the house.

I know this sounds kind of gross, but save the hair that you clean out of your hairbrush, and put the balls of hair in nylon socks, hang them around your house (outside). For some reason, raccoons despise the smell of human hair. My parents used this trick pretty effectively to keep the raccoons out of their grapes.

Also, the cayenne pepper trick works, but it's meant as a deterrent to keep them from eating things out of your garden. Not very effective on anything they aren't tasting... it's not the smell of cayenne, but the spice/heat that deters them.

My dogs are pretty good at keeping raccons away from the house.

I don't know about cayenne pepper. It sounds like of like an urban legend, but you can give it a try. It won't hurt anything.

My main suggestion is to make sure there's no food around your house to attract the raccoon.

Smith and Wesson makes some really great products for this situation... I highly suggest checking them out.

Have a heart traps work great too... you just need to relocate them very far away or they will come back.

Since you live in the country, I recommend LEAD POISONING. Pick your gage, but I prefer .50 cal. muzzle loader.
