Several years ago the supreme court ruled that The Boy Scouts of America were well within their rights to block homosexuals from becoming leaders. Part of their oath is to keep themselves morally straight and they back it up.
Personally I think that in a day and age when pedophilia is rampant that this policy is added protection.
Now the city of Philadelphia is jumping on the punishment band wagon and jeking their support of this wonderful program.
see the news story here:

I know that Philly is " the city of BROTHERLY love" but this is ridiculous.
why can't people leave a good thing alone? Why hurt these innocent children in an adult quarrel?

ralfcode..your 1st paragraph is an answer I could live with, but as far as the rest, aren't we supposed to discriminate between right and wrong. we're talking morally straight here.
and my apologies apolgies to stacia pehaps it is bigoted to lump all pedophiles as homosexuals or vice versa. that was not my intent. I do know some very nice gay people who I'm positive would never hurt anyone, much less a child. that still doesn't mean that I agree with what they are doing.

It's pretty straightforward - BSA, as a private organization, can discriminate if they choose to. The city, as a public organization, cannot. If the city shows preferential treatment (by charging the local council rent at a rate less than the going rate), it is putting the city's stamp of approval on that discrimination. I think that the city is within their right to do this, and in fact SHOULD do this.
Let me give you some background - I was a scout leader for 10 years. I think most of the program is VERY worthwhile. But on the issues of atheism and gay rights, in my opinion, I think there's a few stubborn, bigoted Good Old Boys at national HQ in Texas that are suffering from a cranio-rectal inversion.
There are a lot of units, from the Cub Scouts all the way up through local councils, that take a more enlightened view about these issues. Go take a look at the Scouting For All website at the link below. The program was started by an Eagle Scout (One of Scouting's finest, remember) when he didn't like the discrimination he saw in the program. Take a look at the link there about BSA's discriminatory policies. Ask yourself - do you think that this sort of discrimination is the type of thing YOU want to be associated with?

What a bigoted comment! It's so sad that people continue to teach their children to hate someone just because of who they are.
Homosexuality is not connected to pedophilia in any way. I think the Boy Scouts are way out of line. This organization should change their homophobic policy and try to teach kids about diversity and acceptance.
ADDITIONAL COMMENT:
You may think a $199,999 rent hike seems outrageous, but so is $1 annual rent on that building! The city was giving preferential treatment to the Boy Scouts by allowing the organization to rent that building for $1 a year. But as a government entity, the city cannot continue to give preferential treatment to an organization that is discriminatory. The city has no choice but to treat the Boy Scouts the same way any other private organization would be treated, which includes charging them a fair market rent for the space.

It grow to be a renounce. which would be accompanied via extra surrenders. because of the fact some gay scout will "hit upon" he can not safely be guided in scouting. and not utilising a gay scout grasp. Canada Boy Scouts has been decreased to a third of it is club earlier than their renounce. there's a reason boy and woman scouts are separate. This decision tosses that for the period of the waste basket. What disgusts me maximum approximately gays? Is their penchant for making each and every thing rotate around brazenly being pleased with which human hollow is your excitement style. not the rest is greater considerable to them. what's outstanding is that curiously (synthetic or real) gays have been in the scouts in basic terms advantageous. in the previous this decision you ought to not stand in the previous your fellow scouts and proclaim all you think of approximately is the place you dip your thingie! Be it a youngster. you will possibly nonetheless get the scout grasp's ire for it. Now? Why we ought to sit down down around the camp hearth and talk how effective it particularly is that lil Jimmy gets a tough on drowsing in the tent with lil Bobby. Nor to think of ill of him. of course lil Bobby remains in trouble for sneaking over to Camp Wowowa and kissing lil Susie Being gay is starting to be a privileged proper. it particularly is SO very incorrect. No American could delight in a privilege that must be sponsored via State ability. We might to boot bypass returned to Jim Crow. what's so incorrect at present with searching for the "birds of a feather" fellowship we as quickly as enjoyed so regularly? I mean, even all male establishments ought to now be forced to settle for gays and ladies people. There are valid reasons we separate the sexes and options for comparable. We 're all going to pay for violating those ethical ideals. Be like a Roman gay stressful to be a Vestal Virgin Viva l. a. difference!

I've been a Scouter since 1970. Philadelphia did what it had to do to serve the interests of all citizens. The BSA is a good organization with a great program, but it must comply with the law. I think that it is good that the city charges fair market value for the property, now there is less complaining from the people who say that BSA is supported by tax dollars. It shouldn't be. It is a private organization, and should be funded by its membership.

I don't know what the problem is with not letting homosexuals become boy scout leaders. How many homosexuals really have the dream of becoming a boy scout leader anyway? One?

The boy scouts defended their right to be bigoted and intolerant. The Boy Scout organization does not have the moral character that make them deserve to be supported.

The boy scouts USED TO BE a fine organization until it was hijacked by religious groups. It no longer deserves respect or support, certainly does not deserve public funding. In contrast, the Girl Scouts continues to be a fine organization.
