My family doesnt have wishlists. I usually buy for my mother and my fiance's parents and then spoil my kids. My sisters all say not to buy for them because our family is so big, but I usually get them all a nice token gift of some kind. Last year I made up a little bundle of goodies for each of them. Christmas is more about the kids anyways.
I shop for my kids during the July sales, so that is well taken care of.
My fiance keeps asking me what he can get me for christmas, but I dont want anything.......I hate telling people what I want.

I usually tell mine I want theirs by the end of October. But most people don't usually do their shopping until the day after Thanksgiving, thats when they get in the mood, or when the weather starts to turn cold (depending where you live of course). But Thanksgiving gives them a month to shop, so is plenty of time and not too early to seem eager.

when/if they ask for it then its the proper time. I wouldnt just hand over a list of things I want for Christmas without being asked first even if it is to family.

If everybody was smart, we would all do our shopping the week After Christmas. That way you can get it for half off, or get twice as much. I think thats why gift cards are the bomb. Use 'em after the holidays when everything goes on sale.

When someone asks you what you want. To force the list on someone who didn't ask assumes that they wanted to give you a gift.
