isn't knowing something only a concept you create based on your previous "understandings"?
Perhaps you only think you understand, and no one really knows anything.

Awesome question. I think about his alot. I will say we are all perfectly imperfect. All we know is our own experiences. Life is a trip!

your right ; knowing something can be based on previous understanding. I think knowledge is a balance of personal experience & book smarts. For example, if I were a photography student & I wanted to get the best advise on shooting landscapes I would read up on that subject but would also seek advise from photographers who have great success with landscaping photo's. In addition to that I'd gain knowledge by trying it myself & learning through mistakes. So, yes to your question "Does anyone really know anything"; they do. Balance is the key. I hope this answer helps. Take care

This is the fundamental question of epistemology, a branch of philosophy. Ultimately, most things ultimately rest on one set or another of assumptions and thus are suspect. Some ideas in logic appear to be bullet-proof, but even that assumes that our ability to reason can't be superseded somehow by awakening to a state where we realize that our reasoning too assumes something that doesn't necessarily have to be so.

Plus, the first day of epistemology class, they point out that we can never be sure we're not dreaming! Or that we're not brains in a vat like in the Matrix. Kinda tough to take yourself too seriously after that -

However, for all that, I think we CAN say that what we think we know, scientifically and not carelessly, is accurate enough to build houses and airplanes, so it will work for us the way knowledge is supposed to work - enabling us to predictably influence our environments.

Toolhug it isn't what you think you know that is right, it is what others don't know that is believable. It may be a concept or understanding, or even an experience that will make people think they know anything, but that is how we humans react when asked a question or give a solution.

That's funny. That's exactly the question that all Western Philosophy really begins with. Socrates. 'Know thyself', for its all you can know.

I personally would agree with Socrates. For it seems completely apparent to me: all our knowledge is built within a framework of human understanding: the table isn't actually a table, I simply call it that. And because of that, it makes me angry. So much done in the name of 'human reason', when in fact we can't even see that we did not in fact create the world. We are products of it! And so is our limited knowledge! We should respect that!

these kind of questions come up in our everyday life, for example, can you imagine nothing, not even a colour, not white, white exsits, not nothing, all invsible, no universe, nothing, but invisible can be a colour, it really annoys me, lol but god created us with limited minds, so we cannot think beyond things, ok lol, i tottaly changed the subject sorry i get carried away sometimes, so obviously understanding, was discovered by someone, like you discover to walk, and then understand
