Whether it is a misconception or not, I think what is important to remember here is that although a certain religion forbids something or allows it, the followers of that religion can still do what they want. Case in point, the issue at hand. Hypothetically, if Islam does not state that death is a suitable punishment for leaving the religion, you'll still have people who will take matters into their own hands and kill people. This applies to all the major religions of the world. Basically, how individual people behave is in no way an indication of what the actual religion preaches. Anyone who doesn't understand this obvious and simple truth is clearly ignorant of the facts.

Wilful/pre-meditated murder. Rape of a child. Years ago many people were falsely convicted and yes may have been executed wrongly that is a terrible state of affairs. Today with the advances in technology, DNA testing etc this should be very unlikely to happen. As for the state taking someones life away I have a solution, if someone is found guilty of a crime that carries the death sentence, let the family of the victim decide their fate. That way those who believe it to be wrong can ask for a life sentence and those who feel it is right can demand the death penalty.. I know if any of my family were murdered or my children raped, I would carry out the death sentence personally. It costs hundreds of thousands of pounds to keep a "lifer" inside, often with every comfort of home. Death, by comparson is cheap, I would hate to think that the criminal who murdered one of mine was being housed, fed and often educated, at my expense!

Cold blooded murder of a child witness to a crime. Cold blooded murder by a drug gang to set an example.
Any sex crime. Anyone who covers up these crimes for another. Anyone who looks like they might commit one of these crimes. Anyone who is around when one of these crimes are commited.
They should be executed that day. If a few are innocent, them's the breaks in a criminal society.

you people are brain washed, no one should get for any reason. we are told two wrongs don't make a right. So why should some one be given death for murder. Don't you find it odd that we are the most jailed country in the world. we have more people in prison for petty crap then any other country. need to stop jailing people for their mistake and leave the prison systems for cold blood killers. make rehab programs for all other people. it would costing them same if you paid taxes for them to sit in jail/prison.so why not reform them. put them in a 7 year program where they work a job pay for housing and get consoling on a weekly basis. Not lock them up and act like they are worthless and useless to society. Death penalty needs to go!

Murder, but only when a defendant makes a confession in open court. We execute too many innocent people. When I was younger I supported the death penalty, but the police and the courts are incompetent, so I don't anymore. Many executions seem to be racially motivated, and there's something fundamentaslly wrong with that. We execute retarded people for cryin out loud.

Murder and crimes against children (molestation, rape, etc.)
I feel that in the case of rape or molestation of a child, the defendent, once proven guilty, should be immediately taken outside, castrated and then shot in the back of the head.
They do not deserve to breath our air for 30 years on death row.

Nothing. By doing so, the state takes the stance that causing the death of another human is SO wrong, that under no circumstances will the state take part in it. There has never been any evidence that having a death penalty reduces crime, so it is really nothing more than state sponsored revenge.
It is also a punishment that cannot be taken back. People are constantly being freed after years of imprisonment based on new information... had they been killed for their crimes, we would have put to death an innocent person.

Murder, rape, child molestation, the first is self explained, the other two are crimes that the victim never completely recovers from.
