TWO FRIENDS WERE WALKING
THROUGH THE DESERT.
DURING SOME POINT OF THE
JOURNEY, THEY HAD AN
ARGUMENT; AND ONE FRIEND
SLAPPED THE OTHER ONE
IN THE FACE.

THE ONE WHO GOT SLAPPED
WAS HURT, BUT WITHOUT
SAYING ANYTHING,
WROTE IN THE SAND:

TODAY MY BEST FRIEND
SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.

THEY KEPT ON WALKING,
UNTIL THEY FOUND AN OASIS,
WHERE THEY DECIDED
TO TAKE A BATH

THE ONE WHO HAD BEEN
SLAPPED GOT STUCK IN THE
MIRE AND STARTED DROWNING,
BUT THE FRIEND SAVED HIM.

AFTER HE RECOVERED FROM
THE NEAR DROWNING,
HE W ROTE ON A STONE:

'TODAY MY BEST FRIEND
SAVED MY LIFE '.

THE FRIEND WHO HAD SLAPPED
AND SAVED HIS BEST FRIEND
ASKED HIM, 'AFTER I HURT YOU, WROTE IN THE SAND AND NOW,
YOU WRITE ON A STONE, WHY?'

THE FRIEND REPLIED
'WHEN SOMEONE HURTS US
WE SHOULD WRITE IT DOWN
IN SAND, WHERE WINDS OF
FORGIVENESS CAN ERASE IT AWAY.
BUT, WHEN SOMEONE DOES
SOMETHING GOOD FOR US,
WE MUST ENGRAVE IT IN STONE
WHERE NO WIND
CAN EVER ERASE IT.'

LEARN TO WRITE
YOUR HURTS IN
THE SAND AND TO
CARVE YOUR
BLESSINGS IN STONE.

That is really excellent. Something I have learned very recently in fact.

Prior to this I reacted to being hurt by feeling it had somehow diminished me as a person, devalued me.

In reality the person hurting us probably has given us no thought at all and acted without thinking - of me or anything else.

Either way it doesnt diminish me, I am whom I am and always will be.

How other people react is their responsibility, not mine. Unimportant, not worth remembering, not worth being angry about - if we are smart in how we live our lives, gone with the wind and forgotten. If possible we learn somethng and move on with the new knowledge.

When a person helps us it generally has an impact that has a real signifigant affect on our lives, usually a permanent affect that we carry with us forever - not to be blown away by the wind.

Thats how I see it anyhow. Thanks for posting it here

That is beautiful. I know some families with brothers and sisters who have not spoken to each other for many years. They are all well educated but somehow lost the ability to forgive and forget.

My best friend sent me that last summer. She and I have not talked for a year and a half.I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. Does it mean to turn the other cheek?

So true. Also a lesson on how not to hold a grudge.
