It signals to the other ovary to not release an egg. Each month both ovaries prepare eggs for ovulation, but only one releases an egg. It also maintains the lining of your uterus so that if an egg is fertilized it can implant. Once the progesterone drops you will have a period.

I am not sure only thing I know is that progesterone rises after ovulation to help support the egg and allow it to attach to the uterus. I guess it is the only time your body will need it so that is when it is produced. It is amazing how God created bodies to know what they are supposed to do all the time. Best wishes ttc!!!!!!!
