I always place cups, bowls, and the like with the rim facing down so all the water can drain away.
The other half however always places them with the rim facing up as he says it is more hygenic.

Which do you think is correct?

I always put the rim facing down, as up water can run back down in to the cup and it can't drain properly. It shouldn't be a hygiene issue though - your bloke should wipe down the draining board before stacking any washing up so it's clean to start with!

The correct answer is: Placing the cups, bowl, and the like with the rims facing down so all the water can drain away. Sometimes when I do it this way, the cups will still fill up with water, glass and plastic both, and then I have to dry them all.

Probably doesn't matter. The sink has lots of germs, so upside down may be less hygenic, but right side up lets water pool in the bowls where germs can gather too. Despite scare tactics of the germ police I bet it's rare to get sick from clean dishes no matter which way they're stacked.

I alway put them with the rim facing down on a wire rack. and bowls get tiped on there side as well as plates. I guess if hygen is the issue you could spray the rack with a safe disinfectant and let it dry before stacking you dishes.

You are...because water left inside the cups can stagnate very quickly....lukewarm water is a perfect breeding ground for germs. As long as you regularly disinfect the surface where you place the cups, then of course it's better to drain the water out...men!

While my dishes are drying in the dish drainer I always face them down like you do, but when I put them up in the cabinet I always face them up for hygenic reasons. Of course you can always tell your other half that if he wants it done his way maybe he should start washing ALL the dishes *weg*

Actually, you are supposed to stack them leaning. So that the water can drain and air is getting in and keeping bacteria from harboring inside of the moist area.

I put mine in the dishwasher now!

Either way is fine:
Before I used to put everything down in order for the water to drip out.
You can use the dish tray thing for the plates so that the water drips out.

I put all of mine in the dish washer with everything facing down. If I hand wash anything then it also goes face down to dry.
