In 1800 the king of Spain gave Napoleon (king of France) the Louisiana Territory and they shut down the trade port near New Orleans. America became mad so Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe over to France to negotiate and buy the Louisiana Purchase. We gained the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon (King of France) in 1803. Gained 828,000 miles for 15 million dollars which was only 3 cents an acre. Gained control of Mississippi River. Lewis and Clark expedition helped America in manifest destiny of wanting to expand into new territories and try to find route to Pacific Ocean. Louisiana Purchase helped us gain lots of land.

The French had no need for this large amount of land in the Western World, and unaware of the great riches it contained, King Louis XVI sold it to the Americans for about 3 cents an acre, which amounted to about 15 million dollars, the best land sale in the history of the world next to the purchase of Alaska from the Russians.

Napoleon Bonaparte technically owned the Louisiana territory - it was claimed by France much earlier but it was almost completely unexplored and unmapped.

Napoleon certainly didn't want it as it produced absolutely no revenue for his war in Europe - selling it to the US made good economic sense for him and provided instant cash.

Napolean claimed ownership, and needed revenue for his war in Europe, which was his immediate concern. But there is evidence that he had plans for world domination after he finished conquering Europe, so he intended to come back to the U.S. and conquer the territory again, anyway, despite the sale. Obviously, he never finished conquering Europe, so his plans to invade the U.S. and the rest of the world never came to fruition.
