Why do historians now refer to the Jeffersonians as neo-Federalists? What made this group neo federalist?

My degree is only a BA (in history), so I'm not REALLY an historian per se. I'd have to say they are very confused if what you say is true. Jefferson was NOT a federalist. He was a d-r and was voted into office by the Republicans. He was very much against federalists like Hamilton. I will say however, that Jefferson saw just how weak his powers (federal government's) were (as compared to state's rights) when he became president. The lack of power granted rendered him pretty ineffective.

Huh? I don't see that this makes sense at all. Jeffersonian Republicans were completely ANTI- federalist. They opposed centralized government, and disliked the concept of a standing army - which is why we mostly had an ineffective army in the War of 1812; we didn't win so much as Britain gave up.... The Federalists became the Whig party - again, directly opposed to the goals of the Jeffersonian Republicans, who by the way were a bunch of hypocrites and would take federal action when it darn well suited them, like the Louisiana Purchase. What historians are spouting this kind of carp?

off the top of my head, Jeffseron is known as a neo federalist as he had to give up some of his strong ideas on his Democartic vuews for the greater good of the country, thus adoptng (or leaving alone) some of the federalist ideas such as the bank.

from everything i know about Jefferson he and the federalists (Hamilton especially) were very much at odds about their vision for America. i can't imagine why the followers of Jefferson would have been termed the neo-federalists.
