bad neighborhoods

Are you looking for an apartment or a home? There are lots of homes on the market but the lower the apartment rent the less desirable the neighborhood on the average. But, rather than looking at the neighborhood to avoid, look at those that are positive.

The biggest thing is to see if there is an HOA, with an association fee and various restrictions I find acceptable. Can you park on the street? Can you work on your car in the street? Etc. Some places have septic tanks and well water; really.

Having lived in Vegas for over twenty years I would recommend The Lakes; Piccolle Ranch, Siena (age restricted), Canyon Gate, Sun City Summerlin (age restricted) Summerlin period, all the west end of the valley near Red Rock. To the south end of the valley I would check into Rhoads Ranch. Painted Desert is a nice area to the far north of the valley but pricey.

Greenway in Henderson has very nice areas though I would not go to anything in the area close to Boulder Highway, what used to be called Pittman (why Henderson is also called Hooterville) and Basic. In Greenvalley there is MacDonald Ranch and Sun City Anthem, both age restricted, but there are great average homes in Anthem that are not restricted. There are some very nice areas on Black Mountain in Henderson.

North Las Vegas has good and not so great areas. Stay away from anything in the area of Eastern and Charleston or close to UNLV (89109 zip). Do not go into the Downtown area.

And Boulder City, small as it is, is a very nice place to live except you have to drive a long ways into Vegas.

Good luck to my home town.!

The closer to downtown the worse it is. The best rule of thumb is the further from the strip the better. Like it was said before about NLV. There are good and bad .. the further north the better.

Most of Henderson is good and Summerlin is also good. They are in opposite corners of the valley and far enough away from the strip that the entire areas are good.

Avoid the area between Cheyenne to Sahara (North/South) and Nellis to Rainbow (East/West) There's quite a few hot pockets in that area. Lake Mead and Martin Luther King Blvd then spread out from there about 2-3 miles.

The main strip where all the casinos are located. They will steal your money!
