The Mexican cession was a payment form Mexico to the United States for the cost of the Mexican-American war. As a condition of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago, to end the war which saw the United States occupy Mexico City. The land would be given to the United states for a monetary consideration of only $15,000,000 Mexico agreed to these terms to avoid the annexation of their entire territory.

The Gadsden purchase was a financial deal whereby the United states paid $10,000,000 for land from Mexico that the US wished to use to construct a southern route through the moutains for the transcontinetial railroad.
