Charley Pride is probably the most famous ... considering he was doing country songs back in the 60's. Although DeFord Bailey was considered the first black country music star. Frankie Staton had a CD out in 1996. There's Stoney Edwards and even Ray Charles did a lot of early recordings of country songs. Try Rissi Palmer and Cowboy Troy.

Classic country --- Charlie Pride
Contemporary ---- Cowboy Troy
There is also a new girl that sings a cute song something about being a country girl, but I can't remember her name or the title of the song--they play it on CMT. I surfed the web a bit trying to find her, but couldn't.
Yes, it's Rissi Palmer---I was thinking Missi but I knew that wasn't right!

Cleve Francis. He was the heart surgeon who had a few country hits in the early 1990s. Not only that but he was signed to his recording label at the same time as Garth Brooks was.
I should also mention that among his many other accomplishments, Ray Charles also dabbled in country music quite extensively.
