A "D" is a pass, barely. "A" is the highest.
Here is the breakdown. You should have been told this already:
A= 4
B= 3
C= 2
D= 1
F= 0
GPA's are calculated with simple arithmetic. 3 "A's" and 1 "D" are 3*4+1/4 so the GPA for that scenario is 3.25.

D is a passing grade, however, SOME colleges may require you to obtain a grade of C or better for classes in your major, you should check your programs grade requirements.
While D is typically the highest "passing" grade, of course low passing scores lower your GPA, also, if you plan to transfer to another college, majority of colleges will only accept grades of C or better. D grades generally do not transfer, but are generally passing grades, again check that with the grade requirements for your particular major. Some colleges have eliminated D grades and they are now considered failing grades...check with your college.

i had to take Anatomy &Physiology as a prerequisite to get into nursing school, so we had to pass with a C or better. C- was considered a failing grade.
Don't beat yourself up, I dropped the first class of A&P ( there were 3 classes in our series) twice before I finally stuck it out to the end, and passed! And it was THE HARDEST class I had ever taken, but I learned sooo much, and I enjoyed it. I also was always an A student and never really had to try. It sucked working the hardest I ever had for a C. But, I was so proud of my C. I earned it!!
Then... Nursing School...mad A&P look like cake.

depends on the class.. d is passing for most general classes, most major classes require a B or C..
some continuing classes require a certain grade (ex C in chem 1101 to be allowed to take chem1102)
depends on the university, could vary within the universities' colleges, and sometimes in the college's departments

That depends on the instructor. Usually below 60 is failing, so you probably got a D. I've had a bad instructor and it showed in all the reviews. (She didn't know the subject, was about 20 years behind on a technical topic). Suddenly my C+ was turned into a B+. The instructor may do something similar so he doesn't look bad. If some fail, that's expected. If everyone does bad, then it's usually the instructor. I know you couldn't drop, but couldn't you have changed instructors?

If your major requires it in the book, it states that must pass with at least a C,
if its not your major then u dont have to since its like a elective but u get credit for it.

D is passing, but barely, and you may be required to repeat the course. And yes, it will hurt your GPA.
