Get your operating system discs and re-install the operating system.

While re-installing, it will ask you if you want to re-format your disk. Say yes and then continue.

If you are using XP Professional/Home there is an option of creating restore points. One should regularly create restore points and clean up the previous restore points. The easy way to do it is go to Start- All programs-Accessories-System tools-Disc Cleanup. Here select the system partition by default if no other previous installations are there it will be C:. Click on ok- click on More options, here in the lower portion there is a tab of System Restore Clean up click on it and click on yes to remove the previous restore points to clean up all the restore points. This makes sure that you have created a restore point till the most recent installations made on your machines. You have not done it regularly as you were unaware of restore points and restored it in the earliest point of installation of OS. In the future whenever you have time follow the process to avoid windows crashes. There are also other ways to create restore points also.

The system recovery will get your PC back to the point you first boght the system. Everthing was wiped out. You will not be able to get your stuff back. The system restore points were also gone with the re-installation.

i suggest you to first go to safe mode and try to add a restore point there.

Even if it wont work den just reinstall the OS but while installing select the option "Leave the current partition as it is " and specify the drive where u want to install.

In this case ur data wont be lost and only a frsh copy of windows is there.

Hi. If you want to recover files from that drive then STOP. Get and install a new drive (cheap) and install Windows. Add your old drive after and see what can be read from it.
