In pre-VCR, pre-AC times (aka the "Dark Ages" or "Pleistocene"), people would sit out on their front porches in the evening as the day cooled down. In the cities, this let you catch up with your neighbors and keep track of who and what was going around the neighborhood. In the country (where I'm from), this just let you watch the occasional car go by. Back porches were for private stuff like parties and cookouts; front porches were for random socializing and keeping up with the gossip. In rowhouse communities, the 'stoop' (the front steps and landing) serve the same function.

The front porch was a great place for the family to gather after a meal and continue to talk about the day. Now, after a meal, the family gathers in front of the TV with snacks.
However, MANY MANY older homes still have front porches, so I'm not sure there is a demise yet.

It was a gathering place for family and neighbors and a place to sit outside that did not exclude community. The same is missed about it.
