I would have to say the Cowboys of the early to mid 90's.
They played in the NFC east which sent 3 teams from it's division to the playoffs just about every year. They had solid competition.

You have a good argument. The Steelers did play against tremendous competition to win their 4 SBs. I can remember watching them in awe, especially their defense (The Steel Curtain). What an imposing defense for such a long time. It's hard to take anything away from the other dynasties you mention, the Pats, the Niners, the Cowboys. I agree with you that not only did the Steelers triumph over superior competition, but they usually demolished them. By the way, I'm not a Steelers fan. I consider myself a Bengals in the AFC and Cowboys in the NFC fan, but I appreciate the great teams. The Steeler dynasty you refer to was a GREAT team.

a strong case can be made for the cowboys teams of the 90's. a guy named norm hitzges makes this case in a new book called, "best team ever?"
it's so hard to pick between the packers of the 60's/steelers, 70's/ 9'ers 80's/ boy's 90's.....however, what the pats are doing right now is the most impresive because they are doing it in the modern era of free agency and salary caps. i'm not saying the pats are better than some of those old school dynasties. i am saying they are the envy of the nfl for the way they do things in this era. nobody else is even close! (lets see the colts get another and i may change that)

I would have to say the 90's Cowboys. The reason is: The competition during that time was alot better! There where alot of teams with records like 10 - 6 or 11 - 5. Now days you see teams that either have a losing record, or dominate their opponents. There was a greater balance of talent in the league back then.

I think it is a toss up between the recent Pats (3 of 4 super bowls...and maybe more on the way) and the Steelers of the 1970s.
The Brady-Belichick Crew has done a great job of mining the best of its revolving roster in the "new" era of the NFL.
The Steelers just got all over people in their day. Their personnel was perennially strong. I believe they have something like a dozen HOFers on their 1970s teams.
Too bad they couldn't play one another...the outcome would settle it for me.

1.Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s. They won 4 Super Bowls in 6 years ('74, '75, '78, '79), & 6 straight division titles.
2.San Francisco 49ers of the 1980s. They won 4 Super Bowls in 9 years ('81, '84, '88, '89).

The best with the best tools? Cowboys of the 90's
The best with some flair? Steelers
The best above all else beacuse they did it with anyother teams #2's and 3's, thus making them the best? Patriots

I think that the Niners is currently the best but I dont think there is any doubt that it will eventually be the Patriots after a few more super bowl wins.
