"If You Come Softly" by Jacqueline Woodson

"Jeremiah is confident about who he is -- that is, when he's in his own Brooklyn neighborhood. But when he starts attending a fancy prep school in Manhattan, he realizes that black teenage boys don't exactly fit in there. So it's a surprise when, during his first week of school, he feels an immediate connection with a white girl named Ellie. In one frozen moment their eyes lock, and after that they know they belong together -- despite the fact that she's Jewish and he's black. Their worlds are so different, but to them that's not what matters. Too bad the rest of the world feels differently"

"Arlene Fleet, the refreshingly imperfect heroine of Jackson's frank, appealing debut, launches her story with a list of the title's deities: "high school quarterbacks, trucks, big ****, and also Jesus." The first god, also a date rapist by the name of Jim Beverly, she left dead in her hometown of Possett, Ala., but the last she embraces wholeheartedly when high school graduation allows her to flee the South, the murder and her slutty reputation for a new life in Chicago. Upon leaving home, Arlene makes a bargain with God, promising to forgo sex, lies and a return home if he keeps Jim's body hidden. After nine years in Chicago as a truth-telling celibate, an unexpected visitor from home (in search of Jim Beverly) leads her to believe that God is slipping on his end of the deal. As Arlene heads for the Deep South with her African-American boyfriend, Burr, in tow, her secrets unfold in unsurprising but satisfying flashbacks. Jackson brings levity to familiar themes with a spirited take on the clichés of redneck Southern living: the Wal-Mart culture, the subtle and overt racism and the indignant religion. The novel concludes with a final, dramatic disclosure, though the payoff isn't the plot twist but rather Jackson's genuine affection for the people and places of Dixie"

"Diane Anderson is living a lonely existence in Roanoke, Virginia. A librarian with no social life, her only entertainment is reviewing books online and playing solitaire. On Christmas, she starts reviewing books about African American women, something she knows about from firsthand experience, and posts a bad review even though the book takes place in her adopted town. Meanwhile, Jack Browning is gradually getting over the loss of his wife and young son while working on his second novel. His first book, a steamy interracial romance, is due out soon. Ironically, the first person he connects with at the local library after the tragedy is Diane. Unaware that he is the author she has criticized, she does wonder why this white man is reading black literature. Murray writes a gentle romance about cultural differences and deep commonalities in a unique tale about white-black relationships that mirrors his life as a white man married to an African American woman"

"What an amazing treat this book is! If you're like me, you've been tempted to pick up a 'multicultural' romance novel, but perhaps have shied away, not knowing what to expect. We don't want to buy a book that turns out to be cliched, insensitive, or clumsy. But we live in America in the 1990s, and it's a little strange (to me, at least) to see so many contemporary romances out there that don't address the issue of race and culture. It's reality, and when sensitively done, it can add wonder detail to a story. All this to say, FORBIDDEN QUEST is a great book . . . it is not a 'fluff' book. It is not a lightweight read with a few 'exotic' characters thrown in for good measure. The multicultural aspect is integral to the story, and the backdrop of modern-day Savannah, Georgia, is described with beautiful detail. Take the plunge into the multicultural world with this book you won't regret it.
Under the Covers Book Reviews, June 25, 1998
FORBIDDEN QUEST is a must-read romance, especially if you believe love is color- blind (or would like to). Carolyna Sinclair is from an old, established Southern family with old money and old prejudices. She has been raised with all the ingrained beliefs of her station in life and believes they are true until she meets Paul Michael Quest, a handsome man from Jamaica. They belong to different races, different cultures, [and] have different values . . . Not a run-of- the-mill romance, FORBIDDEN QUEST approaches the differences head-on, examines them, and goes on. It is sensual, sizzling, thoughtful, thought-provoking, and above all else, a keeper".

This Site Might Help You.
RE:
Good Interracial Romance Writers/Books?
I don't label myself as strictly an interracial dater, but I do date men of different ethnicities than me. So...since I'm an avid reader...I'm now looking for some interracial fiction...preferably romance books/novels/articles, etc.
Can anyone help?

You should really check out Mike Walden's (dating coach) report on how to make any guy, doesn't matter if is your boyfriend, husband or someone who you just met, feel so attracted to/in love with you, that he will get obsessive thoughts about you, all done through text messaging.
I know it sounds crazy but it works. I've tried it and I still can't believe how some simple text messages changed everything. Get the report here for free: http://www.texttheromanceback.link

Well, it's not a romance, but I'd recommend White Teeth by Zadie Smith. It's about a mixed-race girl growing up in England, but has flashbacks to the beginnings of her parents' relationship.
