If this latest injury is serious enough, and the Sox end up winning this World Series, do you think Wakefield will retire? He has had an amazing career in Boston and he is getting older. Don't get me wrong, he's one of my favorite players, but for a guy who throws 60 miles an hour, he has a lot of back and shoulder problems.

Wakefield is an icon in Boston. I believe regardless of Ring or not...he'll retire. He is a great pitcher. One of the only true knuckleballers left. If he retires, they should retire #49.

We all love Wake. I hope he comes back but if he retires, I hope that they retire his number as well.
Interesting side note. Doug Mirabelli (Wakes Catcher) is about 36 yrs old and reaching the end of his career. If Wakefield retires, Mirabelli will probably follow which will free up 2 roster spots. The Red Sox need a young talented catcher to wait in the wings and study under the tutelage of Jason Varitek who is also getting older.
The Rockies have a young talented catcher named Chris Ianetta ( a Rhode Island native) who might be just the guy to fill in if (and when) Wakefield and Mirabelli retire.

It seems like this can really be a serious injury this time. I sure hope not but, if it turns out to be very serious, he may just have to retire. I love Wake too, he has been an integral part of the Red Sox for a long time!

I think he'll come back if the Sox offer him a contract. If not I think he'll retire. He's been a Red Sox so long I don't think he'd want to go elsewhere at this point. When he does retire I doubt we'll ever see another knuckle ball dance like that again. It's a lost art.

The latest word is that Wakefield's injuries are serious enough, and that his recovery time from them is getting longer, such that, regardless of how the Red Sox finish up, he may simply hang it up for good.
Will all depend on how the offseason works out.

The SOX have a 3 million dollar option on him and considering how he pitched this year and the price of good starting pitching right now it's almost a lock that they'll exercise it & he'll be back for at least 1 more year.

he'll come back next year, he has a perpetual 4 million dollar option on his contact. thats obsurdly cheap.he could pitch to 50 on that kind of money. they kept him off because of his injury and because if he started it would be in colorado, who knows what that air would do to the knuckler(it might actually help it, though)

i think he will, the knuckle isnt the same as it used to be. it had more movement in the past and hitter can key in on it now. i think he was a great pitcher who was underrated and should have been recognized for his skill.
