I had my blood work done last week and today I have an appointment for a pelvic ultrasound to look for cysts on my ovaries. What should I expect as I have never had an ultrasound before? Is it like an x-ray where they have to study the images for a week or will they know something as soon as they see it? Just curious. I'm tired of waitng and I want to know if I have PCOS.

nope you shound know that day. an ultrasound can be internal and external either produces results that the ultrasound tech can confirm imediatly and the doctor can also conferm this too. an US is a device that can be used internal and external. it uses sound waves to project images to the monitor. internal one looks like a platic stick with an bulb on the end and is inserted into the vagina and the external looks kinda like you computer mouse and is pressed gently over and around your pelvic area and from there the can see your internal organs, cysts, blood flow, prtty much anything.

Ok, I have been diagnosed with PCOS for 4 years now, and pelvic ultrasounds have become a normal thing for me. They can do an internal or external pelvic ultrasound from what they have told me. I always get the external because the internal one is never needed I guess. The external one is just like what they would do to look at a pregnant mother and her unborn baby. They put that gel stuff on the lower abdomen and run their little "wand" over it. They will look at your overies, your uterus, and they will measure them as they scan. They will measure the folicles on your overies and much more. I'll warn you . . having a full bladder is very important! lol it is uncomfortable, but it is important, and if you want to get in and out of the dr's office, I would make sure you have a full one when you go in. :) I hope this helps.

Oh honey, I just had this.

Do not worry it's simple. For an external ultrasound they will put warm jelly on your pelvic area and run a small hand held smooth machine around and take pictures. It's simple.

If your getting an internal ultrasound they will put a probe into your vagina and move it around a bit. If you have PCOS you will know because it will hurt a little. But if your healthy it won't hurt at all. They use jelly for that too.

The results are pretty much right away, it just depends on how long it takes the doctor to look at them.

Don't worry, You'll be fine.
