There is no "rule" for how a woman enters menopause. My mom's periods just stopped one month at age 51 and she never had another one. I, at age 51, on the other hand, am having erratic ones, late, early, light, heavy. Gotta love that womanhood!!

It could be, then again your body just may be getting out of whack a bit. My mom thought that she had begun going through the chance because all of a sudden her periods got SUPER heavy (she even ended up in the ER because it was that bad). She'd have a really awful month, then she wouldn't get one for a couple months at a time. The doc ran some tests and said she isn't anywhere near menopause yet. Why not ask your gyno and maybe she'll run the same test and will be able to tell you where you are.
Good luck!

Normally when woman go threw Menopause their periods become irregular starting early starting later, heavier or lighter periods, periods lasting longer than normal. They do not consider you to be in menopause until your periods have stopped for at least 6 months consecutively. You are actually still going threw the change and it can take several years. There are some woman who just stop abruptly (which all wish at this age would just happen) But for the most part we all have to threw the cycle change before complete cessation of menses.

Ohhhh wow, scary isn't it? Leads to all kinds of questions! Being the same age as you, actually just turned 46, I too wonder about 'the change'...for me tho, my periods have never been reliable...I have never been on BC, never been preggers. Best answer I can give you is ask your Dr. and if ya don't have one, check w/ a womans clinic.
As I understand it, and the women I have talked to, Mom, Aunts and friends..it tapers, and then then it just stops...And if you are in a relationship, that can make you wonder if you are pregnant.
Good luck, sorry I know it doesn't really help.

It slowly tapers off. I would still using controceptives (condoms/birth control) until you are free of periods for 1 year, because you can still get pregnant. It usually takes about 5 years from the start of symptoms to the end. Talk to your OB/GYN about this and he might put you on HRT.
Good Luck!

Possible the onset but if you are around new woman also like at work..your dates can change according to who is the dominate woman in the group. Sorta like the lions and his pride... All the females periods adapt and come together so when they do mate...all the offspring are born together. Its just nature

It can be abrupt or it can taper off, or both.
