I am so glad you asked this question! I found out about it yesterday and am still seething over it! It's OK to spend like there's no tomorrow and give billions to other countries, while cutting funding to assist poor families here at home.
Last week, Blackwater was awarded a five-year, $15 billion contract because "The U.S. government reportedly wants to use contractors to help its allies thwart drug trafficking and provide equipment, training and people."

Now $1.4 billion, a ten-fold increase, to Mexico to fight the "war on drugs", on top of the additional 196 billion for the wars in Iraq and Iran. But at the same time, when winter heating costs are expected to rise 40%.... the Bush administration is CUTTING funding to the Home Heating programs that assist low-income families.

Are we supposed to get a "warm fuzzie" that those pesky poor people won't be turning to a life of crime and drug selling to keep their families from freezing this winter??

I think fighting the supply of drugs won't result in winning the war on drugs, rather think we should fight the demand.
Who buys drugs? Why do they buy them? How can we stop them?
I think we would find that the majority are drug abusers with problems and became drug addicts.
What are those problems? I don't know. But for 1.4 billion maybe we could hire some experts to study and find out.
I'm thinking the typical crack addict is probably poor and te typical cocaine addict is probably rich.
So, its not poverty that is the root cause.
In the fall of 2001 in New York City there was an increase in marijuana useage.
Hmm,
think there might have been any catastrophic events that would cause someone to wanna get high and escape reality?

Hey 500 million thats the same price as an Embassy in Iraq. Amazing things cost the same the world over. Dont we already support their economy with jobs!! Maybe if they did something for their borders we could consider it. Mexico is nothing but a drain on the USA. Drugs are made there specifically meth. when sudafed started getting restricted guess what country has a massive increase in sudafed. Mexico complains when corn prices go up that we are shafting them and then you look at what they think of us:

you have to scroll half way down the page to get to the world opinion of the USA. A huge minority 41% dont like us.

We shouldn't, but Bush has no concept of money, so I guess he'll just have them turn on the printing presses again. How can one person be so fiscally irresponsible? The United States is broke, how can we give anything to anybody? He must not care what happens to the country.
We have given Mexico most of our manufacturing jobs, isn't that enough?
Bush should be impeached!

That is the dumbest idea ever. We have a raging drug problem in America...Why are we giving money to Mexico? The only drugs that come out of there are weed and coke...Crystal meth is destroying people's lives and can be made in a basement.

Why is the US giving money to other countries when they are in debt? I saw a couple of days ago Bush giving millions to Mongolia which is just going to go into Mongolian politicians slush funds

You right-wingers deal in emotions and not facts. We waste that much money on three days in a hopeless war in Iraq.
As far as the $1.4 billion to Mexico goes, I'd rather spend the dough on the Mexican economy to provide jobs to potential illegals than spending much more on border security and fences to keep them out.
Don't let your emotions control your thought process. Relax and think about it & do the numbers. Foreign aid for Mexico is much cheaper than border security and will be more effective in keeping illegals out of the US.

They might as well give it to me to flush down my toilet - it will have the same result.
I heard they were running out of oil years ago - which is why the remittances from illegals are so important.
