Lightening, thunder is the sound of lightening. Since Light is faster than sound, and lightening travels at such a quick speed, thunder will come after longer depending on how far away you are from the lightening bolt

both happen at the same time, its just the speed of light is quicker than the speed of sound, so you see the lightening before you hear the thunder.
